Do I have to order immediately when my R2 invitation arrives?

Official answer: an early invitation does not require immediate ordering. Rivian’s August 2026 ownership article says recipients who are not ready can wait while retaining their place in line. That statement concerns the invitation stage, before committing to a particular build. Rivian source

This answers a narrower question than whether Rivian will hold a vehicle already assigned for delivery. Do not assume the same flexibility applies after you confirm an order, receive a vehicle assignment or accept an appointment. Those stages need an answer tied to your account.

If you are waiting for a specific combination of equipment and color, retain the invitation and check what your account actually offers when you are ready. Keeping a place in line does not, by itself, guarantee every earlier configuration or offer remains available. Avoid placing a speculative order simply to find out what happens next.

Next step: decide whether you are still considering the invitation or already changing a confirmed order. For the former, save the official guidance; for the latter, ask the delivery team what a delay would change before altering the order.
