A first-EV demo discussion on r/Rivian raises family suitability alongside driving impressions. It is a useful reminder to evaluate ordinary tasks, not just the exciting part of a test drive. Reddit: first-EV R2 demo impressions

Before booking, write down three jobs your next vehicle must do well. Examples might be school pickup with bags, a tight parking space, or a regular drive to visit family. Ask whether the demonstration can include a safe, representative route and time to explore controls while parked. Confirm the vehicle’s trim and wheels so you know what you actually tried.

Bring the measurements that matter at home. Garage opening width, parking depth and the dimensions of a frequently carried item are more useful than a vague impression of spaciousness. If bringing a child seat or bulky equipment, arrange that with the location ahead of time and allow for proper checks.

During the drive, have the passenger note questions rather than asking the driver to document everything. Evaluate visibility, seat comfort, control reach and the transition between familiar roads and parking maneuvers. Ask for an explanation whenever you are unsure which feature is active; do not experiment with unfamiliar assistance in traffic.

Afterward, score your three jobs before reading other reviews. Separate observed strengths from things you did not test. A short demo cannot establish winter range, long-term reliability or service quality.

Share one thing the drive answered and one thing it did not. Include the demo date and configuration, and label any comparison with your current vehicle as personal experience rather than a universal ranking.

What should a first-time EV buyer settle before ordering an R2?

Resolve your daily charging, service plan and purchase deadline before choosing accessories. These three decisions determine whether the car fits your life more directly than a long list of specifications.

For charging, write down daily miles and the hours the car will normally sit at home. Have a qualified electrician quote a suitable installation and explain any panel work before you select equipment. If home charging is unavailable, try the actual public or workplace routine you would rely on, including its opening hours and backup.

For service, locate the center you would use and ask how mobile appointments and workshop visits work for your address. Plan for a repair that cannot be completed at home. Do not assume another owner’s quick appointment predicts your wait.

For the roughly three-month horizon in the question, keep a usable transport fallback until your own delivery is confirmed. Community timelines are examples, not a booking commitment. During the demo, drive a route resembling your commute and try your real passenger/cargo arrangement. Write down the few things that would make you decline the car, then test those deliberately. A positive owner review cannot answer those personal fit questions for you.
